The mission. Well, on an individual level, the mission for this website is to educate the heart and mind. On a community level, same. And on a global level, same! The vision is to help to create the conditions for a more compassionate and peaceful world. That sort of thing. Even just a little bit.
... is the project of Tony Boris. From 2011 to 2015, I served as President of the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center of Philadelphia (Lama Losang Samten, Rinpoche) where I lead occasional practices and groups. I also value the insights and techniques developed by John Kabat-Zinn, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Tara Brach, among more than a few others.
In 2011, some friends and I founded the animal welfare nonprofit, Philadoptables (born from the good intentions of the ACCT Citizens Advisory Council) and before that, I served on the boards of several Philadelphia area animal welfare and music nonprofits, including the wonderful Network for New Music.
In the world of music, I invite you to visit me @ Peace, baby. on YouTube and Spotify or if you're feeling really ambitious, my website which houses my street photography, musical theater songs and other archival material. For my commercial photography, there's a website for that, too. I wish you the very best and I hope your visit is worth your while.
In action, the mission gets fulfilled through these sorts of offerings:
1. Offering classes and workshops on meditation, mindfulness techniques and related practices for people of all levels, backgrounds and interests.
2. Sharing helpful information on ways to help reduce our suffering and create a more compassionate society, both on an individual, community and global level.
3. Recognizing that, as f*cked up as this world appears to be, that the health of our minds is dependent upon the love and joy in our hearts, and that through kindness and compassion for each other and toward ourselves, we create space for our own happiness, too. No one said it would be easy.
My teaching philosophy (precarious as it is) arises from the principles of lovingkindness and compassion taught by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, my precious teacher, Ven. Losang Samten, and the site's namesake, the 8th century Buddhist monk and scholar, Shantideva. The highest language of the heart is love and kindness in all its many forms and translations. So this is my path too.
